The term “No Woman No Fraid” is a chant developed from the traditional lavway ‘No Bois Man No Fraid.’  It was written by playwright and cultural activist Eintou Springer as part of the play Mambule, a ritual re-enactment of the 1881 Riots, a watershed moment in the fight for cultural sovereignty during the colonial era.

The chant was first adopted by Talparo stick fighters’ but can now be heard in gayelles across the country during stick fight season.  It celebrates the crucial role that women have played and continue to play in keeping communities and traditions alive through culture, ritual, celebration.
