A Calypso Queen Transcends Boundaries

Since winning the calypso queen title in February, Stacey Sobers-Abraham continues to move up the calypso ranks. In July Sobers-Abraham represented Trinidad and Tobago at the recent Crop Over Celebrations in Barbados, performing at the All-Stars Calypso Tent as a guest for their Pic o’ de Crop Competition. Later that month, Sobers-Abraham won the Caribbean Queen title during the St. Kitts and Nevis Culturama celebrations, where other regional calypso queens from other islands including Barbados, St Vincent and US Virgin Islands also vied for the title.

In August Sobers-Abraham was invited to perform at the ACUK/ABC London Calypso Tent for its Calypso Monarch Finals and the People’s Choice Show as part of the Notting Hill celebrations.

This year her career as a calypsonian has been very rewarding, as she has travelled internationally for the first time as a calypsonian. Sobers-Abraham has grown tremendously as a calypsonian and while she aims to continue to mentor up and coming females in calypso, she is also inspired to take her own career to higher heights. When Sobers-Abraham is not travelling she is part of the Music Connection, a band that covers a wide genre of music at venues across Trinidad and Tobago.
