Persistence Breeds Success
Calypso Queen Stacey Sobers is basking in a successful 2018 carnival season. Sobers-Abraham started the season on a high note, winning the Nationals Women’s Action Committee’s (NWAC) National Calypso Queen competition.
She went on to earn a spot in the semi-finals of the National Calypso Monarch competition in Skinner Park, known as the Mecca of calypso, where she sang “Calypso Capital”, a fitting rendition which, for the first time, placed her securely on the Dimanche Gras stage for the finals of the National Calypso Monarch Competition.
Sobers-Abraham said she is humbled by her success and memorable experiences this season. She continues to be passionate about a career in calypso. Sobers-Abraham has been in the entertainment circuit for the past 16 years.
She began her calypso career in 2014 and tested her mettle in 2015, placing fourth in the NWAC Queen competition. She also made the reserve list for the Calypso Monarch semi-finals that year. In 2016, her biting social commentary, “Prove Me Wrong”, and another ditty titled “one Love”, dedicated to calypsonian Black Stalin, saw her again among the semi-finalists for Calypso Fiesta.
